New Graduate in Computer Science or Relevant Engineering Degree.
We are looking for a Engineering Systems Specialist to take ownership of three major engineering areas within our organization:
- Web Platform Deployment & Code Quality
- Robotics Competition Operations
- STEM Teaching and Support
This is a hands-on technical role for someone who enjoys building reliable systems, establishing engineering standards, and helping technical teams execute effectively.
On the software side, you will ensure that our web platform is deployed reliably and that developers follow strong engineering and code-quality practices.
On the robotics side, you will oversee the engineering systems behind our FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition teams. You will ensure that robot design, CAD, mechanics, programming, testing, documentation, and team workflow come together to produce reliable and competitive robots.
The goal is not simply to complete technical tasks. You will be responsible for creating the engineering processes, standards, and systems that allow both our software and robotics teams to consistently produce high-quality results.
Responsibility Area 1: Web Platform Deployment & Code QualityDeployment & Infrastructure
- Own and continuously improve the deployment process for development, staging, and production environments.
- Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines.
- Ensure deployments are repeatable, documented, and reliable.
- Establish appropriate testing and validation before production deployment.
- Monitor deployment failures and investigate root causes.
- Improve rollback, recovery, and release procedures.
- Work with developers to ensure deployment and infrastructure considerations are incorporated into development.
Code Quality & Engineering Standards
- Establish and enforce coding standards across the development team.
- Review pull/merge requests and ensure appropriate code-review practices are followed.
- Introduce automated quality checks where possible, including:
- technical planning & specification doc generation and writing;
- Linting and formatting;
- automated testing;
- build validation;
- static analysis;
- dependency and security checks.
- Establish expectations around testing, documentation, architecture, and maintainability.
- Identify technical debt and recommend improvements.
- Help developers improve code structure and engineering practices.
- Build systems that enforce quality automatically rather than relying entirely on developers remembering procedures.
Technical Process
- Create clear definitions for when code is ready to merge, deploy, and release.
- Improve development workflows so engineers can move quickly without sacrificing reliability.
- Document important architecture, deployment, and engineering processes.
- Help investigate production issues and prevent similar problems from recurring.
Responsibility Area 2: Robotics Competitions (ie. FIRST or any other competitions)
- You will provide technical and engineering leadership for our robotics competition programs.
- Your responsibility is to ensure teams follow a strong, repeatable engineering process and are capable of designing, building, programming, testing, and competing with reliable robots.
- While technical complexity will differ between platforms, the core engineering process should remain consistent:
- Understand → Design → Prototype → Build → Program → Test → Diagnose → Improve
Robot System Design
- Lead the overall technical direction of the competition robots.
- Analyze competition rules, game objectives, constraints, and scoring opportunities.
- Break competition challenges into robot capabilities and engineering subsystems.
- Help teams determine which mechanisms and capabilities should be prioritized.
- Evaluate design alternatives and technical trade-offs.
- Encourage designs that prioritize ie. Reliability, simplicity, maintainability, performance, rapid iteration and more)
- Ensure mechanical design, programming, sensors, strategy, and driver operation work together as one complete system.
Competition Engineering Responsibilities
Provide engineering leadership across the following areas for our competition teams:
- Prepare Student Interview, Presentation and Technical Knowledge Readiness
- Design scalable outreach system for students to gain extra points in the community
- Mechanical architecture and LEGO robot architecture design;
- CAD, assemblies, and attachment modularity;
- Drivetrain design, motors, servos, and sensors;
- Mechanisms, manipulators, and attachment design;
- Robot programming and autonomous routines;
- Tele-operated control and mission strategy;
- Localization, sensor integration, and autonomous navigation;
- Version control, software architecture, and mission sequencing;
- System integration, competition reliability, and repeatability;
- Testing, iteration, and robot-design documentation.
- Develop and implement a parts management system
Responsibility Area 3: STEM Teaching (Student Success and Parent Support)Student Engagement & Technical Teaching
- Engagement & Rapport: Build strong rapport, motivate students through storytelling, and adapt lessons to student interests to make content digestible.
- Mentorship: Inspire interest in STEM and guide students toward critical thinking and problem-solving by providing hints rather than direct answers.
- Service Quality: Ensure all student and parent interactions consistently maintain high satisfaction ratings.
- Documentation: Maintain detailed notes on student progress, including strengths, areas for improvement, previous accomplishments, and ongoing feedback.
Parent Engagement
- Proactive Communication: Provide regular updates on student progress, regardless of inquiries.
- Feedback & Goals: Deliver consistent, results-oriented analysis and set tangible improvement goals.
What Success Looks Like
Web Platform Success
- Deployments are predictable and reliable.
- Developers consistently follow engineering standards.
- Code-quality requirements are increasingly enforced automatically.
- Problems are identified before reaching production.
- Development velocity improves because engineering expectations and processes are clear.
Competition Success
- Secure provincial tournament qualification.
- Complete functional robots early to allow for rigorous testing and iteration.
- Ensure seamless integration across mechanical, software, and strategy subsystems.
- Validate all autonomous and tele-operated systems for consistent competition performance.
- Document engineering decisions to prioritize iterative improvements over rebuilding.
Mentorship & Teaching Success
- Students show high engagement through personalized, technical, and narrative-driven guidance.
- Students develop strong critical thinking and problem-solving through guided discovery.
- Competition teams achieve reliability via systematic testing and intentional, documented engineering.
- Cross-functional sub-teams (mechanical, software, strategy) collaborate seamlessly.
- Stakeholders report high satisfaction due to proactive, results-oriented, and transparent communication.
Engineering Philosophy
A key responsibility of this position is to create systems that make good engineering repeatable and scalable.
We do not want quality to depend entirely on one talented developer, one experienced robotics mentor, or one team member remembering every procedure.
The engineer should continuously ask:
"How can we build a process, tool, standard, or system so that the team consistently does this correctly?"
Whether deploying our web platform or building a competition robot solution, the objective is the same:
Build reliable engineering systems that allow teams to execute quickly, consistently, and at a high technical standard.
