Overview
ASP Health is an early-stage commercial company working to develop and bring to market novel medical devices. Our first device is used in the operating room to take a biopsy sample, deposit it on a microscope slide, and then dry, fix, and stain the slide for immediate evaluation of the sample adequacy. Our second device is a digital microscope designed to specialize in specific workflows and applications. The device is combined with AI and image processing capabilities to aid in the assessment of the microscope slides. Developing robust software and models with excellent usability will be instrumental to the success of this role.
We are looking for a highly skilled Software Engineer specializing in medical image processing, software development, and AI to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and engineering, with a focus on developing and optimizing algorithms for image analysis, enhancement, and recognition. This role will be responsible for designing, implementing, and testing software solutions that process and analyze images of cytology and pathology slides, from image acquisition through AI-assisted assessment. It will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, develop innovative solutions, and ensure the highest quality of software deliverables. If you are passionate about image processing and eager to contribute to cutting-edge projects, we would love to hear from you.
We offer a competitive salary and benefits package to full-time employees that includes health/dental/vision, company-paid life insurance, optional medical/dependent care FSA, HSA, 401k, and many other benefits. Our team enjoys paid holidays and paid, flexible PTO (paid time off) as well as an adaptive work schedule.
Duties
- Develop, optimize, test, and validate image processing models/algorithms/software.
- Create, maintain, and improve image processing systems, libraries, and frameworks.
- Work with cytopathologists to design annotation protocols and manage labeled image datasets and annotation workflows, including integration with annotation platforms such as CVAT, data quality auditing, cloud storage, and traceable dataset versioning.
- Design model validation studies with appropriate data splits and clinical performance metrics (e.g., sensitivity and specificity for sample adequacy), ensuring consistent performance across sites, operators, stain batches, and devices.
- Conduct performance analysis and optimize models for real-time, on-device inference (e.g., ONNX, TensorRT, embedded GPU), meeting defined latency and reliability targets.
- Develop and maintain cloud-based AI infrastructure (e.g., Google Cloud Platform (GCP)), including data storage, compute resources, automated data pipelines, resource optimization, and model deployment workflows.
- Develop and maintain production software that integrates AI models into the company's imaging platform, connecting image acquisition, inference pipelines, prediction metadata, image visualization, and clinician-facing user interfaces.
- Build, optimize, and troubleshoot GPU-accelerated training and inference workflows, including multi-GPU training, checkpoint/restart functionality, memory optimization, and performance benchmarking.
- Design, develop, and maintain production Python applications, including backend services, APIs, and multiprocessing workflows.
- Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot Windows-based software applications, including desktop user interfaces, software packaging, installation, and release management.
- Implement software engineering best practices, including automated testing, logging, error handling, debugging, version control, and reproducible software builds to ensure reliability and maintainability.
- Independently own software solutions across the full application stack, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure system performance, reliability, and scalability.
Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience in a related position.
- Strong programming skills in Python and C++.
- Experience with medical image processing, specifically microscopy and cytology/pathology (e.g., whole-slide imaging or digital pathology systems).
- Hands-on experience training and evaluating deep learning models for segmentation, detection, or classification using frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow, including with limited labeled data.
- Understanding of computer vision techniques.
- Experience developing and operating machine learning workflows on cloud infrastructure, such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including cloud storage, GPU compute, Python-based training pipelines, and resource monitoring (e.g., Prometheus). AWS or Azure experience is acceptable.
- Experience with software development lifecycle and methodologies.
- Experience with version control for code, data, and models (e.g., Git, DVC, MLflow).
- Knowledge of signal processing and mathematical modeling.
- Experience with GPU programming and optimization.
- Experience working in healthcare, medical devices, or biotech.
- Knowledge of image preprocessing, compression, and enhancement techniques.
- Experience deploying models on edge or embedded hardware (e.g., ONNX, TensorRT, NVIDIA Jetson).
- Eagerness to learn, grow, and take on many challenges and opportunities across the company.
