Spokane, WA, US
Job description
Location: Hybrid or Remote (US-based - Spokane Washington)
Employment type: Part-time, Fixed Term (4 month minimum)
Experience level: Mid-level (3–6 years)
Role summary
We are seeking a hands-on Embedded DevOps Engineer to design, build, and operate the cloud, mobile, and device-fleet foundations of a connected wearable health technology platform.
This role owns the technical architecture that connects wearable devices, mobile applications, clinician or customer portals, and cloud services. The engineer will develop secure, scalable systems for device provisioning, remote configuration, telemetry collection, software updates, user onboarding, and fleet performance monitoring.
The ideal candidate combines cloud architecture expertise with strong mobile-app systems knowledge and practical experience managing deployed IoT or connected-device fleets. Experience in regulated healthcare, wellness, medical-device, or privacy-sensitive environments is highly desirable.
Key responsibilities
Cloud architecture and platform engineering
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable cloud architecture supporting mobile applications, connected wearable devices, APIs, databases, analytics, and administrative portals.
- Define the system architecture for secure communication among wearable hardware, mobile apps, backend services, third-party integrations, and internal operations tools.
- Build and manage cloud services
- Develop secure, well-documented APIs for mobile, web, device, and partner-system integrations.
- Design data models and storage systems for user profiles, device records, application events, telemetry, sensor data, firmware versions, and audit logs.
- Establish cloud reliability practices, including monitoring, alerting, logging, backups, disaster recovery, incident response, and capacity planning.
- Create CI/CD pipelines for backend services, infrastructure, mobile application releases, and device-firmware distribution workflows.
- Implement infrastructure-as-code practices using tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, Pulumi, or equivalent technologies.
- Evaluate and manage third-party cloud, messaging, analytics, authentication, communications, and device-management vendors.
Mobile application architecture
- Lead the architecture of iOS and Android applications that pair with, configure, and receive data from connected wearable devices.
- Define reliable device-to-mobile communication workflows, including Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, cellular, or other supported communication protocols.
- Design mobile application functions for onboarding, account creation, device pairing, user education, troubleshooting, notifications, settings, and data synchronization.
- Work with product, UX, firmware, and clinical teams to translate user needs into secure, intuitive mobile experiences.
- Establish standards for offline operation, data synchronization, background processing, error recovery, battery management, and app performance.
- Guide decisions regarding native, cross-platform, or hybrid mobile development frameworks, such as Swift, Kotlin, React Native, Flutter, or related technologies.
- Implement mobile analytics and observability that identify onboarding friction, pairing failures, device-connectivity issues, feature adoption, and application stability.
- Ensure mobile app releases meet app-store requirements, privacy standards, accessibility expectations, and organizational quality processes.
Device fleet management
- Design and operate a comprehensive device-fleet-management system for deployed wearable devices.
- Create processes for device identity, serial-number management, provisioning, activation, ownership assignment, replacement, return, refurbishment, and decommissioning.
- Develop systems to track the installed base by customer, account, software version, firmware version, hardware revision, geography, connectivity status, and operational health.
- Implement secure remote configuration and over-the-air software or firmware update capabilities, with version control, staged rollouts, rollback controls, and deployment audit trails.
- Establish fleet dashboards and automated alerts for low battery, connectivity degradation, sensor anomalies, firmware-update failure, elevated error rates, unusual usage patterns, and device end-of-life indicators.
- Define fleet segmentation and release-management procedures, including internal test devices, pilot users, controlled cohorts, production populations, and high-risk or high-priority deployments.
- Partner with hardware and firmware engineers to improve device telemetry, diagnostic logging, remote support tools, and failure-analysis processes.
- Create support workflows that allow customer-success, operations, and technical-support teams to diagnose device issues without exposing unnecessary personal or health information.
- Analyze fleet-level data to identify reliability trends, quality issues, support drivers, product opportunities, and preventive-maintenance needs.
Security, privacy, and compliance
- Build security into cloud, mobile, and fleet-management architecture, including authentication, authorization, encryption, key management, secure device identity, secure APIs, and audit logging.
- Support privacy and security practices appropriate for sensitive user information, including HIPAA-aligned safeguards when applicable.
- Collaborate with quality and regulatory stakeholders to support design controls, cybersecurity documentation, risk management, software lifecycle processes, and post-market monitoring activities where required.
- Help establish policies for data retention, access control, consent, incident management, vendor security, and secure software development.
- Participate in threat modeling, security reviews, vulnerability management, penetration-testing remediation, and software dependency management.
- Produce architecture diagrams, technical requirements, operating procedures, and documentation suitable for engineering, operations, quality, regulatory, and executive audiences.
Cross-functional leadership
- Partner closely with hardware, firmware, product, clinical, UX/UI, quality, regulatory, operations, and customer-support teams.
- Translate business, clinical, operational, and user requirements into practical technical architecture and engineering priorities.
- Evaluate technical tradeoffs among cost, reliability, time to market, cybersecurity, scalability, privacy, and regulatory risk.
- Establish engineering standards for code quality, documentation, testing, release readiness, and production operations.
- Mentor engineers and technical contributors as the organization grows.
- Serve as a technical escalation point for cloud, mobile, connectivity, fleet, and production-system issues.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in software engineering, cloud architecture, information systems engineering, platform engineering, or connected-device development.
- 3+ years of experience designing, deploying, or operating cloud-based production systems.
- Experience building or architecting mobile applications for iOS, Android, or cross-platform environments.
- Experience with at least one major cloud platform: AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure.
- Experience designing RESTful APIs, event-driven systems, microservices, serverless architectures, or related distributed-system patterns.
- Experience with device, IoT, hardware-connected, telecommunications, consumer-electronics, or sensor-based product ecosystems.
- Understanding of device provisioning, identity management, remote configuration, telemetry, firmware lifecycle management, and over-the-air updates.
- Proficiency in one or more languages such as Python, TypeScript/JavaScript, Java, Kotlin, Swift, Go, C#, or C++.
- Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, data pipelines, logging systems, observability tools, and production monitoring.
- Strong working knowledge of cybersecurity principles, cloud IAM, encryption, secrets management, network security, and secure development practices.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex issues spanning hardware, firmware, connectivity, mobile software, cloud infrastructure, and end-user workflows.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risks and decisions to nontechnical stakeholders.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with wearable devices, Bluetooth Low Energy, IoT platforms, remote monitoring, or sensor-driven products.
- Experience in digital health, healthcare technology, medical devices, wellness technology, telehealth, or other regulated technology environments.
- Familiarity with HIPAA, SOC 2, FDA cybersecurity expectations, IEC 62304, ISO 14971, ISO 13485, or secure product-development practices in regulated settings.
- Experience with remote patient monitoring, remote therapeutic monitoring, clinical data workflows, or healthcare-system integrations.
- Experience deploying OTA firmware update systems and managing fleet-wide staged releases.
